The Boone and Crockett Club was founded in 1887 by Theodore Roosevelt to deal with the decrease in wild animal populations in The United States and Canada. Today, the Boone and Crockett Club is a charitable organization devoted to hunters and preservation principles, education and learning, as well as preserving trophy records.
The Club, as it is often referred to, has been documenting large game trophies since 1902. The Club’s Executive Committee oversees the Records Board and their job is to facilitate a system that completes 3 goals on behalf of preservation activities.
- Accumulate wildlife information to sustain huge game animals’ recovery, administration, and preservation.
- Attract hunters to become involved in preservation and conservation activities.
- Promote sportsmanship by just approving trophies done in the manner of “fair chase” as specified by the Club.
The Boone and Crockett Club’s Records of North American Big game Program approves all lawfully taken prizes under the guidelines of reasonable chase whether taken with a rifle, bow, shotgun, hand gun, muzzleloader, or weapon. The Club’s scoring system for trophies applies to different types of deer, elk, moose, caribou, pronghorn antelope, buffalo, Rocky Mountain Goat and more.
How to Score a Trophy
While each animal has a slightly different method to score them, they all follow a similar method. First, the measurements must be made to the nearest 1/8th of an inch. For deer in particular the number of points on each antler is counted, which must be at least one inch long. Next, the spread between the two tips of the antlers is measured. The greatest spread and the inside spread are also measured and entered into a calculator. Then the total length of all of the non-typical points are measured and added. The length of the main beam, normal points and circumferences of each of the antlers are measured and recorded. All of these factors are then calculated and given an overall score. The biggest scores are announced each year and if applicable they will be entered into the historical records as well.
World Record Trophies
